We did it – 5th Grade All-Net Boys Team is National Champion!!

WSJ 5th Grade All Net National Champions

When the 5th Grade All-Net Boys team started the season, the goal was to compete for Nationals in LA and win it all. Mission Accomplished!! We are bringing home the 1st ever 5th Grade All-Net Boys National Championship in West San Jose’s 21 year history!

A successful season requires a well thought out game-plan, discipline and commitment from the players, parents and coaches. The 5th grade Boys All-Net team was an embodiment of this core tenet led by Coach Dino Plancarte. We started the season strong with a 4-0 record heading into the holiday break in December. Coming out of the break however the team experienced its first real test with two back to back loses ending the 1st half of the regular season with a 4-2 record. This reality check was a blessing in disguise as it required the team and coaching staff to dig in deeper and re-double their efforts.

The team responded to the challenge superbly by winning the remaining 6 games in commanding fashion and closing the regular season with a 10-2 record. The stage was set for a final showdown between West San Jose and Evergreen for the Sectional Championship. We had split the regular season games and knew we had to have the perfect combination of game plan and solid execution. We stifled the Evergreen offense with well executed defensive schemes and won the sectional championship (and with it a ticket to LA for Nationals) with a commanding 14 point win. By this time, the team was hitting on all cylinders, defense was playing at a high level and players were executing their roles well.

The team headed for LA and won the first two games with ease against Tracy and San Gabriel Valley. Finishing #1 in Pool 2. Unfazed at the prospect of playing a level 1 Willow Glen team (silicon valley section level 1 tournament runner-up), in the championship game, the boys kept their cool and brought a stifling 1-3-1 defense against a high-post Willow Glen offense (who was averaging 52 points per game).  The result a defense that allowed 27 points and a commanding 16 point win to become NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!! Offense wins games, but defense wins championships… So true!!!

It was a complete team effort from players, parents and coaches alike!!
